Soaking up the Sun: The Importance of Daily Vitamin D

Let’s talk sunshine. More specifically, vitamin D. I’ve come to appreciate just how powerful it can be to pause for a few minutes, step outside, and feel the sun on my skin. It’s not just mood-boosting, it’s medicinal.

What is Vitamin D (and Why Should We Care)?

Vitamin D is actually a hormone, not just a vitamin, and it plays a big role in our health. It supports our immune system, helps our bodies absorb calcium (essential for strong bones), and has been shown to have protective effects against depression and fatigue. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Vitamin D helps regulate mood and may reduce the risk of depression [1]. Studies have even linked vitamin D deficiency to an increased risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and certain autoimmune conditions.

Vitamin D also supports brain function. Researchers have found that low levels of vitamin D are associated with cognitive decline, especially in older adults [2].

Why Natural Sunlight Matters

Yes, you can get vitamin D from food and supplements (fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified milk are all good sources), but your body is designed to produce it when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Just 10–30 minutes of midday sun a few times a week, depending on your skin tone and where you live, can help keep your levels in check [3]. Make sure to wear that sunscreen though! Just because you have sunscreen on, does not mean your body is not benefiting from the sun.

The beautiful thing is, stepping outside for a few minutes doesn’t just help your body, it soothes your mind, too. These things reset our nervous system in a way a supplement bottle never could.

A Gentle Reminder to Get Outside

In the busyness of life (work, errands, kids, dinner prep), it’s easy to forget to simply be outside. Taking the time to step into the sun, even briefly, is one of the kindest things we can do for ourselves.

A short morning walk, sipping your coffee on the porch, playing in the yard with your kids, or gardening in the afternoon light; all of these count. You don’t need a whole wellness routine. You just need the sun and a few uninterrupted moments.

So today, consider this your little nudge: go outside.
Let your skin breathe. Let the sunlight do its work.
You’re nourishing more than your body- you’re nurturing your spirit, too.
