Giving Permission to Rest

This past weekend was a beautiful reminder for me: sometimes the best moments are the ones we don’t share online.

My family was in town, and with a garage sale/bake sale happening at the same time, there was a steady flow of family in and out of the house. On top of that was multitasking work and preparing a cookout. It was busy — tables full of past treasures, a toddler running around, conversations overlapping, a constant cycle of baked goods coming out of the oven — and yet it was grounding. I found myself getting upset that I wasn’t documenting the fresh cinnamon rolls, or the beautiful weather. These are the moments that don’t fit neatly into a social media post, but are a great reminder to slow down.

In the middle of the constant rushing, I also found myself craving pockets of rest — small moments to breathe, to make a cup of coffee, to let my body and mind recharge. It’s easy to get swept up in the energy of it all, but I realized how important it was to listen to what my body was asking for: a slower pace, even inside the whirlwind. Rest isn’t just something we earn after the work is done — it’s something we need in the middle of it too.

In a world that constantly pulls us toward documenting and sharing every second, it felt good to put my phone down and simply be there. Fully present. No pressure to capture the perfect picture or write the perfect caption. Just living the moment and enjoying a wonderful weekend.

If you’re feeling pulled in a million directions lately, I hope this serves as a gentle nudge: it’s okay to step back. It’s okay to be fully present. It’s okay to rest. Social media will still be there when you return. But these moments with the ones you love? They are happening right now — and they’re far too precious to miss.

I’m Shelby

Welcome to The Gentle Harvest! I’m a wife, mom to a sweet toddler, and a Registered Nurse on a journey to embrace a slower, more intentional life. In the midst of the fast-paced world we live in, I’ve found joy in the simple things—gardening, canning, sewing, and baking.

This blog was born out of my desire to document my journey toward a more holistic, peaceful way of living while connecting with other moms who long for the same. Here, you’ll find inspiration for slowing down, practical tips for a simple home, and encouragement to savor the little moments in motherhood.

If you’re looking for a community of like-minded women who want to embrace a life of simplicity and intention, you’re in the right place. Let’s create a space where we can share, learn, and support each other on this journey.

I’m so glad you’re here!
